Ambitious plans for a new £6.9m Roman baths museum in Chichester city centre have taken a major step forward.
A formal planning application for the three-storey development has now been submitted by the district council, which is itself responsible for the project.

Although the decision on the application will be made by the authority's own southern area
development control committee, councillors will have to consider any representations by other bodies, such as West Sussex County Council and Chichester City Council, as well as local conservation groups and residents.

The site is in Tower Street, where the 2nd century Roman baths are located, at present buried under a car park. The council's aim is to display the remains of the baths at basement level, as a feature of the new museum.

A separate application for the construction of a 26-unit residential development in the same area has also been put in.

The sale of these properties is expected to help meet the cost of the museum scheme, along with proceeds from the sale of the existing museum, in Little London.

The council's aim has always been that none of the capital cost should fall on tax payers.
