More than 150 people braved the soaring temperatures to compete in a five-mile race in memory of two schoolgirls who lost their lives in a car crash.
The fourth annual Fishbourne Flat Five cross-country race took runners and walkers on a circuit through picturesque countryside to the finish line outside the village's Woolpack Inn.

Athletes James Baker and Karrie Blake fought off stiff competition to cross the finish line first for the second year running, James even bettered his course record by almost a minute, finishing in 28min 05sec.

Among the competitors were family and friends of Beckie and Lucy Hassell, who were tragically killed in a car accident in October 2006, two of the runners choosing to wear Bob the Builder and furry dog costumes.

The event on Sunday continued with two further races aimed at younger runners, one a two-mile course and the other a fun run.

The two-mile race was won by William Simpson and Amy Howes, both 13, who crossed the line in 27min 3sec and 27min 58sec respectively.

Organisers of the race were thrilled to hear more than £1,400 had been raised for a new ICT suite for Fishbourne C of E Primary School, where Beckie and Lucy were pupils before joining Bishop Luffa School.

And that does not include sponsorship still to come in.

Headteacher Nick Sharp said: "It was very well supported by the whole school. I ran it together with governors, staff and parents."

The event ended with a barbecue at the Fishbourne Club.

Race director John Sheppard said: "The day now includes a really challenging race to give runners of all standards the chance to test themselves, and encourage activities for walkers, children and even dogs.

"This makes it a very special inclusive day for the village of Fishbourne and I hope it will continue to be supported and developed in years to come."

Organisers have thanked marshals, first aiders, the refreshment team, plus Game, Set and Match who provided numbers and T- shirts.

In addition they are grateful to The Woolpack, which allowed the use of its car park and provided refreshments, Scarterfields for the use of its drive, Chichester Runners for the loan of its 'start' and 'finish' gantry and Fishbourne Club for providing facilities and a barbecue.

Results from the Fishbourne Flat Five will be published on the Observer website – www.chichester.co.uk – later this week, in next week's Observer and on Fishbourne School's website www.fishbourne.w-sussex.sch.uk
