Government funding could provide free swimming in Hastings

Government funding should be used to help fund free swimming for the young and old.
That is the opinion of Hastings MP Michael Foster who is urging Hastings Borough Council to tap into the Olympic buzz by providing free pool sessions for people over 60 and under 16.
He said: "Following an amazingly successful Olympics there is now huge enthusiasm for sports generally and we should be taking this opportunity to increase swimming participation by giving the over 60s and under 16s the chance to swim for free."
The MP is urging the Council to access a £142million government fund designed to get more people interested in swimming and pay for renovation and maintenance of pools.
The Council's cabinet will consider the proposal at its meeting on September 8.
Mr Foster also emphasised the importance of exercise generally, saying: "We are constantly told of the importance of leading healthy lives and this is an opportunity for the Council to support local residents in their pursuit of healthy hobbies."
