Pupils and staff at Sedlescombe School bid a fond farewell to their much-loved deputy headteacher this week.
Valerie Richardson, who had been at the school for seven years, was presented with cards made by each class and a memory book in a special assembly on Monday.

The whole school then sang a special song about Mrs Richardson and she received her gifts of a rose bush, wine glasses, candles and garden furniture.

Mrs Richardson will be remembered for her hard work on the school plays, as well as running the country dancing and recorder clubs.

Headteacher Marian Ham said: "She is a caring, supportive, kind and hard-working member of staff.

"First and foremost, she has been a most wonderful class teacher, and always gets the best out of every child in her care.

"She values every child, and makes each one feel special."

After school, past pupils and friends of the school joined staff for a surprise party.

A buffet was prepared by the school chef and her assistant, and a magnificent cake was made by two of the school's teaching assistants.

Finally the governors presented Mrs Richardson with a bottle of champagne to enjoy.

From September, Mrs Richardson will work as a full-time class teacher at Beckley Primary School.

Mrs Ham said: "I will miss her support as a deputy-head, but know that our strong friendship will continue.

"Thank you Valerie for being with us for seven years at Sedlescombe School, and for everything you have done for the children, families, staff, governors, village and church communities."

She added: "I am sure that her move to Beckley Primary School will be a very happy one, and they will soon realise what a fantastic teacher they have."
