SLEEPY Broadfield residents were evacuated after an early morning arson attack gutted a caravan and scorched a house.
Firefighters were called to the scene in Trefoil Crescent, Broadfield, at around 2.27am and there were some concerns about nearby gas cylinders catching fire.

Three fire engines from Crawley rushed to the fierce blaze on Saturday morning which left one caravan in ruins and one house damaged by flames.

A woman living in the house said: "There is a bit of damage but we are quite lucky it did not do more.

"We were asleep at the time so we think we've been quite lucky. I want to know who did this though."

Leah Stollin, 27, Trefoil Crescent said: "I was half asleep when I heard lots of noise so I went to have a look and there was lots of firemen and police milling around.

"There was a big bang earlier on that must have been one of the gas cylinders. There was a lot of smoke and I was worried it would spread to the houses."

Masonry was scorched by flames that reached 20ft up to the gable end of the property.

Police and fire investigators will now be examining the scene for clues.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "Three pumps were used to put the fire out.

"Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the flames which were brought under control using one hose reel and a water jet.

"Horsham sent across a special support unit for the breathing apparatus we were using.

"Around five per cent of the external facia of the adjacent building was damaged by fire.

Investigations are still going on but we believe it to be arson."
