When storms gave the grass a salty taste
Great storms have appeared in Sussex over the centuries.
A particularly nasty one in 1703 was recorded thus:
We learn that a violent storm did great damage in this district (Swanborough).
Lewes ladies tasting grapes found them salt. The grass on the Downs was so salt that the sheep refused to eat it till forced - and then drank like fishes.
