Congratulations to newly elected chairman and vice chairman of Lewes District Council
I congratulate the new chairman and vice chairman of Lewes District Council on their election to office.
I am sure they have an interesting and rewarding year ahead.The report states that Councillor Ruth O’Keeffe is “believed to be the first Independent councillor to take the role” of vice chairman.
In 1990 as Independent Councillor for Barcombe, the Conservatives afforded me the honour of nominating me as vice chairman, and in the following year when elections took place and the Lib Dems took the majority of seats, they supported my nomination as chairman.
So, although the Independents were very much in the minority, I had reason to be grateful to both main political parties.
It was a great experience and I met many wonderful people and represented the council at some notable events, but there was a sting in the tail, as with a change of ruling party there were endless meetings to change the standing orders, times of meetings, principal officers, etc.
