Destiny lies in our hands

Although in my experience most politicians are dedicated, hard-working individuals (rather than the self-serving crooks that they've recently been portrayed to be), no one can ignore the fact that people's trust in their elected representatives has rarely been so low and some commentators expect turnout at the next general election to show continuing apathy from the voters.

While no one can be happy that our political system is going through a crisis (and to varying degrees, this same malaise is affecting many, if not most, of the world's democracies), this particular cloud may have the proverbial silver lining.

As many people feel disillusioned about the ruling class, they may once again come to realise that their destiny lies in their own hands.

Isn't it time after all for a realisation that politicians don't have all the answers and that what makes a community vibrant is the people who make it and the decisions they make every day?

And although there are no doubt many other examples in Sussex, I would argue that Lewes, this thriving town and community, illustrates almost perfectly what enterprising people can achieve, both as individuals and collectively, when they embrace nurturing values, such as protecting the natural environment, valuing the historical character of the place they live in, being creative and doing business responsibly.

Yes we can – no matter what happens on election day.
