Fort plan too ambitious
Front-page Sussex Express (January 27, Newhaven/Seaford edition) excellent highlights good news and controversial plans worthy of note.
It is good that Princess Anne visits Newhaven to see the new beacon of education at Tideway School. A truly fine example of regeneration.
Much more questionable as regeneration is " increase capacity" elsewhere being considered 'progress' by a 'Project team' made up of district councillors and employees who work on 'historic buildings'.
Newhaven Fort to have an increased capacity from 400 to 3,000!
Seeemingly a wonderful idea because it will "enable it to grow" and be much larger than the Brighton Dome which only has capacity for 1,000 standing.
What on earth is a venue for 3,000 folk in a small town going to be doing (and how often ?) that the City of Brighton and Hove, with a vast population, comparitively, can do well with much smaller capacity?
At least tell us who started this crackpot idea?
What is to be going on to sustain such a venue for 365 days of the year?
The need for such a development to support the initial costs and then the day-to-day running costs, must be compulsive before any pre-planning council-tax money is allocated.
We are advised that "plans are forging ahead".
Under what/whose authority ? Pause.......!
Meanwhile continue with the good ideas and events for the 400 – that can be sustained.
