Lewes district geared up for Jubilee joy!

We would like to thank John Cornwell (letters, May 18) for his good wishes on our appointment as chair and vice-chair of Lewes District Council for the year 2012-13.

We are both honoured with our appointments coming as they do at the start of a year, which includes two major events which are unique to this year.

We will shortly be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which will be marked by events the length and breadth of our district. To say that the Queen has been and continues to be a source of stability for our nation is an understatement.

Those of us who watched the beginning of the Torch’s journey round Britain will know that reminded us that the Olympics is now on our soil and on July 17 will arrive in our district.

That too will be marked by events and as it is 64 years since the Olympics was last here we can safely assume that to many of us this will not occur again during our lifetimes.

We want to encourage everyone to participate by supporting their local events. There are a large number of events taking place at the time of the Jubilee and round the time the Torch comes to our district and a list of those known to Lewes District Council will be published on the council’s website.

If anyone wants their event listed, they need to contact Liz Lacon on 01273 484141 or by email at liz.lacon@lewes.gov.uk.

It is our intention to try to visit as many events as we can connected with these celebrations and if any organiser wants to involve us in their event they need to contact Heather Jones on 01273 484112.

Economic circumstances may not be all that we desire but that should not prevent us from celebrating these major events and we encourage everyone to do so.

Cllr Tony Nicholson, Chair Lewes District Council, Cllr Ruth O’Keeffe, Vice-Chair Lewes District Council
