Police officers saved the day
ON Wednesday, January 1, I was anxiously awaiting a delivery of a 15kg Calor gas bottle, ordered that morning from a Halland firm.
I was concerned that the van might not get to me due to the heavy fall of snow several hours earlier.
About 11am the bell rang. I answered it to find two police men and, thank goodness, the gas bottle, on the mat.
You are police, I said, why you? They told me that they had come across this van, stuck in the snow in Lewes, whose driver told them he was tying to deliver 'urgently the gas to an old woman living alone'. So, they unloaded his van and brought the canister safely to me.
I can't tell you how very grateful I was to those two kind men, who not only had to carry that weight up two short flights of stairs, but also fitted the cylinders and checked before leaving that it worked properly.
I don't know their names but I would be grateful if you would convey my sincere thanks to them. They will know who they are.
