Stuck over street names
I am revising the book 'Street Names of Lewes', originally published in 1961 by L S Davey for the Friends of Lewes.
I have added about 85 extra street names but, despite exhaustive research, I am still stuck over a couple.
Does anyone know why the names Talbot Terrace and Toronto Terrace were chosen?
They were named by May 1883, well before any houses were built.
There has to be a Canada connection, perhaps the original developer E Wells, or maybe someone in the family of the former land owner, George D'Albiac.
I have not been able to find out what it is.
Then, much later, around 1934, there is Kingsley Road into Landport.
Nearly all Landport roads were called after prominent Lewesians, but not this one, I think.
Was it after Charles Kingsley, the social reformer? Landport came into existence after the 1930 Housing Act which compelled local authorities to do something about unfit housing.
In Lewes, 264 homes, housing about 960 residents were condemned.
Finally, when was the last sheep fair held?
I think it was in the 1960s but am not sure.
Someone must remember? I cannot find anything in the record office or on the internet.
If anyone can help, could they please email me on
kimclark@tesco.net.
The book will be published in the next month or so.
