Throwing stones in glass houses

I WAS disappointed to read County Councillor Paul Sparks' letter (June 19), in which he questioned the credibility of Uckfield Town Council's election of Councillors Ashby and Bennett as town mayor and deputy mayor respectively.

In his letter, Councillor Sparks conveniently failed to mention that the other candidate standing for election as town mayor was one Councillor Dorothy Sparks who is also a Liberal Democrat like himself.

I feel that Councillor Sparks implication that there was an 'inter-party' collusion between conservative and labour councillors in electing the town mayor was a bizarre and emotional over reaction to his disappointment that his fellow party member, and partner, was not elected.

Councillors Ashby and Bennett's election was based on their credibility and suitability for the role and NOT, as Councillor Sparks implies, on their party membership.

In fact, it is a good reflection on the councillors who voted for councillors Ashby and Bennett that they cast their votes with the needs of the town in mind and not that of their own political party.

On the contrary, I would suggest that it is Councillor Sparks who has allowed his party loyalty to affect his judgement over that of the needs of the community in Uckfield.

Perhaps he should be mindful of throwing stones in glass houses!

The majority of councillors on the Uckfield Town Council work well together and strive to deal with all issues affecting the town together as a team, regardless whether they are Conservative, Labour or Independent candidates. Unfortunately, it seems that this cannot be said about all town councillors in Uckfield.

Given his clear disappointment that his fellow party member was not elected as town mayor, I would hope that he accepts the appointment of the new mayor and deputy and work with them for the benefit of the Uckfield Community in much the same way that Uckfield Town councillors (of all political parties) intend to work with him.

Cllr Helen Firth, Uckfield
