MURDER, mystery, red herrings - this play has the lot.
But although there is much to commend in Brian Clemens play, set in 1939, there is also a feeling that the various elements don't quite fit.
We have a young couple living in a rundown cottage in Provence, but the man has a mysterious past.
Then there is a strange old man - what secrets does he hold?
Throw in another mysterious stranger and you have a first act that tantalises and is full of intrigue.
After the break, though, the amount of emotion flying around is a little overwhelming and the whole play ends on an all too convenient a note.
Kim Tiddy as the young woman at the centre of the intrigue, does a fine job, even though she has to spend most of the time sobbing her heart out.
Giles Watling as Ross is solid enough, but the play just wasn't particlularly convincing.
