A WOMAN who opened her 'secret garden' to the public has been awarded a gold medal by Horsham in Bloom.

Joan Lockyer, who is partially sighted and in her 80s, has spent 16 years painstakingly transforming the back garden of her bungalow in St John Close, Horsham, into a mysterious and exotic paradise.

Three years ago she opened it up to serve cream teas and scones to the public to raise money for charity.

She has received a £250 prize after winning the Horsham in Bloom Community Service gold medal.

She is splitting her winnings between two charities - the League of Friends of Horsham Hospital and Roundabout Talking News.
