THE Rev Edward Boys Ellman, author of Recollections of a Sussex Parson, loved the sound of leather on willow. He also had some odd tales to tell about cricket in olden times.
He recounts: ‘There was a man, whose name I now forget, but whom my father several times mentioned, who offered to meet and to beat any four players belonging to the same family.
‘His family team consisted of himself, his wife, his boy and his dog.
His dog was a splendid fielder and quite entered into the game.’
