THIS unusual photograph comes from the archive of the late Eric Buck who was deputy editor/photographer of the Sussex Express until he died in the mid-1960s.

Judging by the clothing of the bystanders, it was taken in the 1900s and shows a judge, flanked by dignitaries, leaving his horse-drawn carriage to attend a service at St Michael’s Church in Lewes High Street.

The occasion was presumably the annual Crown Court service which is still held, these days at St Anne’s.
