A mini way to raise money

THAT august body, the Lewes Lions, is on the look-out for new members.

They were founded in 1971 and have been carrying out good works locally for some 40 years.

This picture was taken on the Spring Bank Holiday of 1978 during a Mini-pushing contest outside the Bluebell Inn in Shortgate.

The Lions prize was a trophy and a £40 cheque.

The contest consisted of two pushers and, thankfully, one person steering. Each team had to push the Mini over a 200 metre course.

The first half consisted of pushing the Mini forwards and the other half backwards.

A strange way to make money, but it worked - and saved on fuel.
