NEWHAVEN boat builder John Robbins celebrates the building of his 50th boat in 1986.
He started his business 12 years earlier, making his boats from steel sheet, precision cut to the shape of templates and then welded together.
The idea for this kind of boat came to John when he once worked on underground oil tanks for Cambridge University’s central heating system.
This 50th boat, measuring 36ft, was ordered by a Southampton fisherman.
