All you need to know about the weather

ROUSER came across a local expression for checking the weather. They say: ‘Looks black over Will’s Mother.’

‘Where’s that?’

‘Pickers Hill.’

‘Where’s that?’

‘Mount Misery.’

‘Where’s that?’

‘Muggery Pope.’

Mount Misery is near Piddinghoe. A theory is the two cottages there got their name from a medieval pilgrim who was heading for the stock ferry crossing near Southease and was caught in a storm. He offered up a ‘miserie’, or prayer, seeking deliverance.

Pickers Hill is near Saltdean and Muggery Pope is what looks like an abandoned piggery on the side of Itford Hill.

That’s all!
