Around Lewes on three wheels

This splendid photograph, in the possession of the County Record Office, shows the yard of C. H. Markwick, ‘tricycle agent and smith’, at Eastgate Wharf, Lewes, in about 1885.

In the balckground is the old railway viaduct and the business is clearly taking advantage of the space offered by the viaduct arches.

Such tricycles were highly popular in Lewes in those days, despite the steepness of the terrain.

Perhaps they should be pursuaded to make a come-back.
