Sergeant George William Hutson, of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, 1st Division, was killed in action at Vendresse on 14th September 1914, aged 24.

Born in Lewes, his family later moved to Heathfield and his name appears on the war memorial in that town. Sergeant Hutson represented Great Britain in the Stockholm Olympics of 1912 and won a bronze medal for the 5,000 metres.

He is commemorated on the Ferte Sous Jouarre Memorial beside the River Marne in the Ile-de-France region.
