Lively fun with ensemble

THE Reinecke Ensemble are the guests of Chichester's Music On Sundays club on Sunday, March 14 at 2.30pm offering works by Reinecke, Mozart, Finzi, Dale and Uhl.

Southbourne-based Christopher Wellington (viola) is joined by Stephen Pierce (clarinet) and Terence Allbright (piano).

Expect a lively entertainment.

"I introduce the works in the concert," says Christopher, and "I always try to find something new to say. And if I can get a giggle out of my colleagues, then that's a bonus!"

At the heart of it all is the players' sheer enjoyment of chamber music: "I have been playing chamber music since the 1950s, and it is such a wonderful combination. You are dodging in and out of your colleagues; you are supporting them; you are sometimes taking the limelight for a short time.

"It is a terrific sense of co-operation and one of the great pleasures."

Having just retired from The Rasumovsky String Quartet, Christopher is now keen to give more time to his two trios, one of which is the Reinecke.

"We are trying to get better known. We have not played many concerts, but we have really started to move it up."

Christopher was the first-ever principal viola of the National Youth Orchestra, won first-class honours in music at Oxford and studied viola with Frederick Riddle and Keith Cummings.

In a varied career he has appeared at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as soloist on viola and viola d'amore, played as principal with the Philharmonia Orchestra and several chamber orchestras, taught at the Royal College of Music and Trinity College (and briefly in Beijing and Shanghai) and has been the viola player of the Zorian and Amici Quartets, the Music Group of London and the string trio Tre Corde.

"We have been in Southbourne for about 11 years." he said.

"My wife and I were in New Malden before that."

Their programme for Music on Sundays will be Trio in Eb, KV498 - Mozart - clarinet, viola and piano; Prelude - Gerald Finzi - clarinet and piano; English Dance - Benjamin Dale - viola and piano; Kleines Konzert - Alfred Uhl - clarinet, viola and piano - and Trio in A, op. 264 - Carl Reinecke - clarinet, viola and piano.

The recital will be in Christ Church in Old Market Avenue, off South Street.
