MUSIC: Crawley Blues Festival
THE fourth annual Crawley Blues Festival is bigger and better than ever, organisers at The Hawth are promising.
"Not only does it include the usual electro-acoustic sets, it now incorporates an electric blues extravaganza in the evening too", says spokeswoman Lorraine Gould.
Acoustic Blues are on Sunday November 8 from 3-6.30pm in the Studio.
"For fans of acoustic blues the festival gets off to a flying start with guitarist's guitarist Steve Simpson, blending the sounds of Ry Cooder, Sleepy John Estes and Mississippi John Hurt. Jim Crawford then takes over with his resonant, barrelhouse blues vocals and top-class finger-picking and slide guitar. Finally Tom Doughty plays his unique blues, full of feeling."
Electric Blues are Sunday November 8 at 7-11.30pm in the Theatre.
"As the day's entertainment comes to an end in the Studio, an electric blues spectacular begins in the Theatre. Nine Below Zero combine rhythm, guitar, harps and vocals to create the best the blues can offer. Sam Kelly's Station House ooze soul, Michael Roach and Johnny Mars bring together urban blues and Chicago-style harmonica and finally there's a rare chance to see a solo performance by one of the finest slide guitarists today, Dave Kelly.
"And there's more… If all this isn't enough for you, then there is the chance to get into the blues vibe before the festival even begins with Mike Dowling's Acoustic Blues Guitar Workshop on Saturday November 7 (12 noon-4pm). The workshop will offer the chance for intermediate blues players to learn from the master.
"On the day of the blues festival why not come along for the jazz lunch with Mike Dowling at 12pm. You can listen to the Grammy Award-winning musician playing everything from Danny Barker to Louis Armstrong while enjoying a traditional two-course Sunday roast."
