Round the Horne, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford

I REMEMBER as a young lad listening to Round the Horne on the radio with my family, enjoying regular characters such as Rambling Syd Rumpo and Dame Celia Molestrangler, and oblivious to all the 'adult' humour.

A few decades on and I can appreciate the wit and comic situations even more.

This latest 'Unseen and Uncut' stage version of the series boasts a superb cast, many of whom look and sound very close to the originals.

Robin Sebastian has the mannerisms and voice of Kenneth Williams, Sally Grace is excellentat Betty Marsden and Jonathan Rigby is spot on as Kenneth Horne.

Rounding off the troupe are David Delve as Hugh Paddick, Michael Shaw as Bill Pertwee and Stephen Bowell as the announcer Douglas Smith who all slot in superbly.

Plus we have 'Not the Fraser Hayes Four' as the musical interlude and The Horn Blowers Big Band.

The strength of the series was always Barry Took and Marty Feldman's scripts and all the favourites are still there, including Paddick's Stanley Birkenshaw, with ill-fitting dentures and spraying saliva and Marsden's Lady Counterblast.

Most of these characters are strong enough to appeal to a new audience, but those old enough to remember the original series will revel in nostalgia and sheer fun.
