REVIEW: Allo Allo
To recreate a television comedy that holds a unique place in the hearts of many people is a daunting task.
To produce it on stage with only one member of the original cast is even more daunting, both for the producer and the actors following in the footsteps of the much-loved characters.
But director James Robert Carson has staged a first-class production of Allo Allo by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft that stopped off in Eastbourne this week.
The stage play stays faithful to the true spirit of the TV series and Jeffrey Holland, best known as Spike in BBC TVs Hi-de-Hi makes a splendid Rene. Vicki Michelle recreates her role as Yvette and it was great to see her acting the part she was born to play.
The casting director Sally Vaughan has picked a wonderful team of actors who portray the extraordinary characters the series is famous for live on stage. Devotees of the series could not fault the play and it proves to be a fun evening in the theatre.
The entire cast appeared to be enjoying it as much as the audience and Nancy Surman has managed to transform Rene's caf from the small screen to the stage with admirable effect.
