Keen local historian Jon Gunson has compiled this series entitled Friday Knight - knights who fought at the Battle of Lewes - giving each a brief biography.

Robert V de Brus, fifth Lord of Annandale, Constable of Scotland and England and candidate for the Scottish throne, held lands throughout the country, including Hartlepool, and the Sussex village of Ripe (through his first marriage, to Isobel of Gloucester).

His grandson, of the same name, became King of Scots. Robert fought at Lewes with a Scottish contingent (including John Balliol and John Comyn) in the Earl of Cornwall’s division.
