Keen local historian Jon Gunson has compiled this series entitled Friday Knight - knights who fought at the Battle of Lewes - giving each a brief biography.

His father was Hubert, Earl of Kent: exalted by King John, demeaned and imprisoned by Henry III...for whom, in consequence, Sir John felt no great love. An early adherent to the baronial cause, he was knighted before the battle by the Earl of Leicester (with de Clare of Gloucester, and de Vere of Oxford ) and fought on the right wing, in the division of the Earl’s sons Henry and Guy. On March 31st 1267 the King sent him to Yarmouth to buy goshawks and falcons, which seems to imply a reconciliation.
