ACCORDING to local folklore there used to be a mad, ‘spider-like’ man who lived inside the cavernous tunnels of Newhaven Fort in the 1920s – an apparition of some terror to young lovers and adventurous kids who ventured in.
The man disappeared when the Fort was occupied during World War Two but allegedly ventured back briefly in the late 1940s and ’50s.
Was he a lost soul? Or perhaps a down-and-out, seeking brief stints of work at the docks.
On the other hand, the whole story could have been a work of fiction created by the Fort authorities to scare off wanderers in those underground chambers.
