THE lady in the centre of this picture was a truly delightful person of many talents - an animal lover of the old school. Rouser knew her well.
Miss Mabel Raymonde-Hawkins founded the Raystede animal sanctuary, just outside Ringmer, more than 60 years ago.
It is still going strong.
Miss Raymonde-Hawkins wanted passionately to prevent and relieve cruelty to animals and protect them from unnecessary suffering.
Her determination and charisma brought in the support that helped Raystede grow from its start, in her cottage and adjoining garden at Ringmer, then on to neighbouring land until her death in 1998 when the charity had expanded across nearly 50 acres.
Since then Raystede’s trustees have invested heavily in accommodation for animals, education facilities and community work.
Long may they continue.
