The sad loss of a pub

The Buckle Inn.
The Buckle Inn.

ANOTHER photograph from Kevin Gordon’s splendid Seaford Through Time (Amberley, £14.99).

It shows the old Buckle Inn, which stood at the western end of Marine Parade, Seaford, for nearly 200 years.

For many years the pub was run by Thomas Venus, who is buried at St Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone.

Note the railway line in the foreground, once used to move chalk for sea defences.

In 1962 the pub was demolished and replaced with a new building, which, oddly, for a short time also served as a pub but is now a private home.
