Church setting for Messiah

Seaford Choral Society, now in its 95th year, will be performing Handel’s Messiah in St Leonard’s Church, Seaford, at 7.30pm on Saturday, December 1.

Spokesman Peter Woodman said: “This magnificent work was composed in just 24 days in 1741 and first performed in The New Music Hall, Dublin on April 13, 1742.”

He said: “It has been performed regularly ever since and Seaford Choral’s rendition aims to follow closely the orchestral format adopted by Handel. The libretto is taken from the Old and New Testaments and was compiled by Charles Jennens.”

The soloists are: Alexandra Stephenson, soprano; Rebecca Anstey, contralto; William Blake, tenor and Thomas Faulkner, bass. The choir will be accompanied by musicians from the Exceat Players on violins, viola, cello and trumpet with Nick Houghton playing the harpsichord. The musical director is Sion Parry.

Tickets, at £10 to include programme, may be obtained from Seaford Tourist Information Centre and Newberry Estate Agents both in Church Street or by calling 01323 896309.
