Mayfield Festival Choir to close jubilee year

This year’s Jubilee celebrations will be the focus of the next concert by the Mayfield Festival Choir which takes place in St. Dunstan’s Church, Mayfield on Sunday, 25th November.

Featuring works by Handel, Mozart and Schubert, the ‘Jubilee Jubilations’ concert will be the Choir’s first under the direction of its new Music Director, the distinguished conductor, musicologist and broadcaster Jeremy Summerly.

“When Handel wrote his Coronation Anthems for King George II in 1727, he couldn’t have known that Zadok the Priest would be performed at every subsequent British coronation,” writes Jeremy.

“Handel dashed off the four anthems in under a month (although this was relatively slow going for GFH, who famously composed the whole of Messiah in three weeks). The first performance was something of a shambles, described at the time as “all in confusion; all irregular in the music”.

There will be nothing confused or irregular when the Mayfield Festival Choir is joined by the sparkling Primavera Chamber Ensemble for what will definitively not be a recreation of the shambolic first performance of Handel’s iconically jubilant Coronation Anthems.

“Few composers could match Handel for speed and productivity – except, that is, for Mozart and Schubert. The side-by-side performance of Mozart’s dazzling ‘Sparrow Mass’ (with its chirruping violins in the Osanna) and Schubert’s mellifluous Mass in G, affords the chance to compare the music of the extrovertly prodigious 18-year old Mozart and the quietly precocious 19-year old Schubert.”

The concert will begin at 7.30pm in St. Dunstan’s Church, High Street, Mayfield. Tickets £8-£20 are available from Rosina’s Fabrics, Mayfield (01435 873670), the Box Office c/o The Post Office, High Street, Mayfield TN20 6AQ or book online at www.mayfieldfestivalchoir.org
