FUNNY man Marty Feldman visited Newhaven for a laugh in 1970.
As related by Ian Everest in the Journal of the Newhaven Historical Society: ‘During the 60s and 70s Marty was one of the funniest men on television and had a number of comedy series to his name. He also wrote for others and scripted situation comedies such as The Army Game and Bootsie and Snudge.
‘In his show, Marty Amok, which was broadcast on BBC1 on March 30, 1970, he had a sketch called “the long distance bowler’’, with Newhaven Cricket Club providing the venue and the players.
‘Marty was the bowler and the gag was that he was seen starting his run-up in Eastbourne. Several years later he arrives at the Fort Road Recreation Ground to find that the players have aged somewhat from when he left Newhaven to prepare for his run-up!’
