LIBERAL DEMOCRATS easily held their two seats in the well-attended St Andrews ward by-election in Burgess Hill on Thursday.
A 42.11 per cent turnout of the 3,512 electorate returned former LibDem leader Graham Knight to Mid Sussex Council after his shock defeat last year and also elected his party colleague Janice Henwood.
The LibDems put in a strong effort on the day, posting reminder leaflets to voters on Thursday, making telphone calls, and calling on homes.
And it paid off as newcomer Mrs Henwood, with 876 votes, topped the poll, with Mr Knight recording 829.
Not elected: Burgess, Peter, Conservative 561; Clapperton, Jim, Conservative 501;
Marshall, Leigh, Labour 40; Smith, Philip Peter Green Party 65.
The election was created by the resignation of LibDem husband and wife team Diane and David Shevels on their move to Somerset.
