COSTS for a new sports pavilion at Hassocks have soared by nearly £100,000 in a few months.
And the credit squeeze has been suggested as one of the reasons for the rise of about 30 per cent.

When the first grant was given in May for the project at Adastra Park, district councillors were told it would cost about £305,000.

But when they
approved the latest grant last week they were told it was likely to cost £400,000.

Hassocks Parish Council is in charge of the project and reported the increase when it asked Mid Sussex District Council to approve a second capital grant, this time for £84,214. The previous award in May was £35,000.

A report to the district cabinet grants committee said: "The parish council have now investigated the project further and have received professional advice relating to the cost for developing the pavilion.

"The feedback and revised estimates have seen the project cost rise to £400,000.

"In addition the price has risen due to the challenging economic climate being faced at the present time."

The latest grant uses all the £84,214 given by developers of the first phase of the controversial housing estate at Mackie Avenue, Hassocks.
The money came from a legal agreement tied in with the planning approval. The homes project provoked strong opposition from people living near the site when planning approval was first sought.
