EIGHT flats had to be evacuated after an arson attack.
The bin store of the Garden of Eden Cafe, High Street, Newhaven was set on fire just before 10pm on Sunday.

A nearby car also went up in flames.

A policeman patrolling the area spotted the blaze and alerted the fire brigade.

Mark Redman, who lives above the cafe, lost his car in the fire.
He said: 'I was in bed and I heard what I thought was hail stones at first, it was really loud.

'I got up and had a look out and it was just a sheet of flames coming right up over the roof.

The fire brigade received the call at 9.53pm and the all clear was given at 12.48am.

They found a propane gas cylinder in the garden which had to be cooled and used a dog to try and find what had started the fire.

Sergeant Graeme Ross of Newhaven Police said CCTV footage was checked.

Any information to police on 0845 6070999.
