PROTESTERS staged a 65ft-high sit-in up a crane on the site where a controversial waste burner will be built
Arrests were made after campaigners stormed the yard at North Quay, Newhaven, at 4am on Tuesday.

A group locked themselves to equipment and climbed the jib.
A banner with the message Stop Incineration Now was draped along the
crane.
Eleven people occupied the crane.

The last climbed down at 6.30pm on yesterday (Wednesday).

Cllr Rod Main from Newhaven Town Council said: 'Obviously, we can't condone (the protesters'] action but we do understand it.

'In one sense, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

'I gather from comments by one of the protesters that they believe it is democracy at fault.

'You can see the point when one considers the planning application had nearly 16,000 letters of objection and only five letters in support and yet the planning committee approved the application.'
