A CONTROVERSIAL TV programme showing the Long Man of Wilmington with breasts and pigtails will be shown on TV tonight (Tuesday).
Fashion gurus Trinny and Susannah sparked fury among druids when they got 80 women to lay on the ancient Sussex landmark and turn it into a woman for a TV stunt.

Druid Greg Draven said: 'Our biggest fear is that they edit us on the programme to misrepresent us as a bunch of loonies.

'We never really expected them to stop it happening and we started an online petition to put our point of view across although we never thought it would be put off air.'

Mr Draven said the pagan community were concerned the TV show would encourage other people to walk across the Long Man, damaging the site.
He added: 'If that happens it could get damaged beyond repair as has already happened with Stonehenge.'

ITV gained permission for the stunt from Sussex Archaeological Society which later apologised after protests were held by the druid community at the Long Man.

A confrontation also took place between Trinny and Susannah and protestors at the site.

The Trinny and Susannah Undress the Nation TV show will be aired on from 8pm to 9pm on ITV1.

Absolutely disgusted that they are going to show this irresponsible farce. As one of the film crew said to me at the site in July "It makes good television". Let's hope not.

Lets hope that the editing of this programme does not show those who protested in a bad light. The protest was a valid stand against damage to an important local landmark. I salute those who took part

This programme and the filming was arranged with the private owners of this scheduled ancient monument. To be fair to them, they are evidently shocked at what transpired and yes, they have apologised, but the genie is out of the bottle now! So many people tramped across the site during a number of rehearsals and once aired, this programme may encourage others to do the same. What example is this to young people and it looks another example to the world of British bad behaviour! The lengths to which this stunt went is indicative of the lack of control such private sites have - English Heritage would have closely monitored the situation had they been involved. The potential for harm and desecration and insult to those who view this as a sacred place would appear to be of little consideration. This year there has been a huge Homer Simpson painted on the hill beside the Cerne Abbas Giant, and painted grafitti on Glastonbury Tor amongst other overt acts of vandalism in the name of marketing/advertising. To counter this a petition is on the 10 Downing Street website calling for the enforcement of the Scheduled Ancient Monument Act and strict monitoring of Consents: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/sacredsites/ - please support it before more such sites are seen as a blank page for crass exploitation. Can you imagine what uproar there would be if a christian, jewish or muslim symbol/monument were treated in such a manner?

What a farce. T and S obviously had no respect whatsoever for anybody but themselves. An absolute farce. Why not go into St Pauls and dress Jesus in a frock ? Its ok as long as you say you 'respect ' the views of those who object!! Respect ???? Someone needs to show these people a dictionary, they truly have NO concept of it whatsoever

Unbelieveable from both those involved at ITV and the Sussex A.S. ... It is unacceptable that authorisation was given in the first place and incredible that someone believes by offering an apology that the situation is resolved. I think the Sussex A.S. need to seriously investigate those members who sit on their board to ensure they are "fit" to represent their organisation.

The protestors are now working wth the SAS to ensure the protection of this site. They do seem to have learned from this and I am prepared to give them my support in the light of this. It is ITV that are now the problem. OFCOM here I come!

Incidentally, ITV have been reprimanded by English Heritage for their practises during filming. They should have obtained Scheduled Monument Consent for what they intended to do. In particular placing sticks in archaeologically sensitive ground for a non-archaeological purpose. They did not say that they intended to do this, and the issue has got as far as the Minister for Culture, Margaret Hodge, who has written "I understand that the production team involved in the making of the programme have already been informed that they should have obtained prior Scheduled Monument Consent. However, I agree that all concerned should be left in no doubt about their responsibilities in respect of our archaeological heritage. I have therefore asked English Heritage to write to ITV to help avoid a repetition of these events in the future."

Apart from the distress caused by seeing such disrespect to a site I and others hold sacred I was disappointed that ITV did not make it clear that Sussex Archaeological Society had apologised to the Pagan community. I have written several letters to ITV also asking them to make it clear that it was unacceptable to walk on the Long Man due to the danger of soil erosion. They obviously dont listen!

You can see a little more of what went on at the Long Man by going to You Tube and searching the phrase "trinny long man" . One video is the protestors' own video account of what happened. The other is a slide show of what went on the day before.
