NETWORK Rail should build a multi-storey car park in Polegate, according to a councillor.
East Sussex county councillor Roy Martin said he was 'sick' of commuters leaving cars in streets near the town's railway station.

He believes the problems stem from Network Rail not providing a 'proper' car park.

He said: 'It is no wonder the c
ommuters leave their cars at the side of the road.

'But that gives our long-suffering residents a big problem.

'The railways should take responsibility and make sure that parking is provided for their customers.

'With the welcome increase in rail passengers now is the time for them to provide a multi-storey car park.'

Cllr Martin thought the costs of parking should be absorbed in train fares.

A Network Rail spokesman said Cllr Martin's concerns had been noted.
He said: 'We are currently reviewing options at this location in partnership with the local authority and the train operator.

'However, there are a number of site constraints such as tree preservation orders and impacts on adjoining properties.

'These need to be considered before we can establish a viable solution to meet public needs.

'We intend to continue dialogue with the relevant parties.'

Do you agree with Cllr Martin?

Cobblers! The car park is plenty big enough. It's the charges that make people park elsewhere!

Cllr Martin's comments are utter tosh. The only reason commuters try to park in the side roads is to avoid paying in the car park. If a multi-storey was put up all we'd get is as many empty spaces in that as there are in the car park now. The only way side road parking can be avoided is to yellow-line the lot and give residents free parking permits, but given that no-one from one month to the next enforces ANY of the parking restrictions around Polegate at all that too would be a waste of time. Perhaps Cllr Martin should think on that for a change and do something about those community police officers who, when they DO decide to make an appearance, totally ignore nuisance parking. I've seen them walk right past illegally parked vehicles without batting an eye-lid.
