A royal visitor met volunteers.
Princess Alexandra visited Newhaven on Wednesday. At Denton Island Children and Family Centre here she was received by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Phyllida Stewart-Roberts.

She took a tour of the centre seeing all the activities including the mother and toddler group, young peoples group and the nursery.

She attended a reception for volunteers of Newhaven Community Development Association (NCDA) at the Hillcrest Centre, Hillcrest Road, where a crowd of 100 gathered to meet her.

She visited Newhaven Fort to present the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service to volunteers from Crossover-Breakout and the Castle Hill Conservation Group.

Sally Foote from NCDA said: 'It was just wonderful, we are still on a buzz after it.

'Around 100 people were at the centre which looked lovely with fresh flowers everywhere.

'It really was a lovely afternoon.'
