Shop to close after 77 years
It's the end of an era in Heathfield High Street.
Roy Ticehurst , 71, retires and his shop, C W Ticehurst si to close after 77 years of continuous trading.
Roy told the Express: 'When my father opened the business we sold wind-up gramophones, grand pianos and music.
'We moved with the times though. The Queen's coronation was the moment TV ownership really took off and I used to earn half-a-crown a time by going round and fixing aerials - sometimes more than 50 a week.
'That was good money in those days considering I only earned about £3 a week working in the shop.
'In those days people crowded into neighbours' houses to watch favourite programmes.'
Mr Ticehurst plans to continue his role as a senior member of Heathfield Park Cricket Club.
He said: 'I'll be sad to retire but the Internet has seen the death of businesses like this - people come and look, then they go on-line and find the same product at a price that's cheaper than I can even buy it.'
