TRIBUTES have been paid to Bonfire Boy Paul Wheeler who died in a road accident.
He was one of Lewes' larger than life characters who clocked up nearly 50 years with Commercial Square Bonfire Society.

His wife Dawn said: 'He was very sociable person and had an infectious laugh.'

She added that he was a regular at the Gardeners Arms pub and his laugh could often be heard as you walked over Cliffe Bridge.

Mr Wheeler, 54, of Market Lane, Lewes, died when he was hit by a car on the A27 AT 10.10pm on Saturday, opposite the Newmarket Inn, near Lewes.

He was pushing his bicycle across the A27 when he was in collision with a white Vauxhall car.

He died at the scene.

More tributes in Friday's Sussex Express.

Tributes can be left below using the comment function or emailed: to sussex.express@sussexnewspapers.co.uk

Tributes:

A true Sussex man; never to be forgotten.
Valmai Goodyear

Pauls generosity and encouragement enlightened and enlivened one of my daughter's interest in all things Bonfire. My other daughter started work at the same time as Paul at the Crown Court and says his laughter will be sorely missed. Such a tragic loss.

Paul was for this kiwi the epitome of bonfire. He was to me and my family, part of the brethren of fine men and women who lived for the smell, noise and excitement of the 5th. Gone my friend but never forgotten. It was an honour to know you.
