WHEN SOMEONE’s had a baby, stay in hospital, bought a new house or are, quite simply, a man, then flowers are now always the right gift. Now two enterprising women from Cross in Hand decided to bring their home-based skills to bear on resolving the present problem. FabulousBakes is the name of their company which does what it says on the tin. It fits neatly with the zeitgeist as the Great British Bake-Off hits our screens this month.
Vicki Wood (53) and Sarah Leisching, (42) both from New Pond Hill, hand-make a selection of cakes, each packed into its own compartment in an box.
They include brownies, flapjacks, lemon drizzle and sticky ginger cakes, macaroons and ever-popular cupcakes and can be themed to a range of events such as birthdays, mothers’ days or just to say ‘thank you.’
Vicki said: “We both like cooking a lot. Two years ago I had a big operation and was not allowed to do anything very much. Someone gave me a box of brownies and I thought, “What a lovely idea. When someone knocks at the door, it’s great to be able to give them a lovely cake that you haven’t necessarily cooked yourself. I’m a busy girl and like to be on the go. A lot of the ingredients we use come from my garden. We took a long time to work out our recipes and have tried them all at least eight times, criticising them as we go along so initial problems are ironed out.”
FabulousBakes started at Heathfield’s Le Marche three years ago. Sarah has three children, Vicki two and the pair find the business chimes well with family life. They’ve expanded by word of mouth. Vicki said: “When someone orders from us they tend to do it again!”
