Alternative Torch run planned in Uckfield

UCKFIELD schoolchildren plan to take part in the Alternative Uckfield Torch Run in July.

After the town failed to appear on the official Olympic torch run, the Uckfield Festival Committee decided to organise one of its own.

Uckfield Community Technology College students will design the torch which will be carried in and around the town by children from Manor, Rocks Park, Holy Cross, Harlands, Little Horsted and St Philips’ primary schools on Tuesday, July 17.

The 2.9 mile run will begin at the junction of London Road and the A272, go along London Road, the High Street, New Town and along Lewes Road to the Little Horsted roundabout.

Roads will be closed to through traffic as the runners go through. The course is divided up so each school has about 750 yards to cover.

Uckfield Festival Committee chairman Cllr Dorothy Sparks was disappointed when she found out that the official Olympic torch was going to by-pass Uckfield. She said: “I realised the date was in Festival week and during the last week of term so asked schools if they would like to be involved in an Alternative Uckfield Torch Run. They were all very enthusiastic and I hope there will be lots of support for runners.”

The event will be marshalled by Uckfield Rotary Club members.
