Band happy to hand over their cash to hospice

THE band that gives it all away will be doing so again in aid of Chichester's St Wilfrid's Hospice.

City Connection will be playing a selection of their favourite numbers ranging from the swinging 60s right through to the latest songs well into the night at Eastergate Parish Hall on Saturday, March 13 from 7.30pm.

Hospice spokeswoman Jill Dennison said: "How many bands do you know that give all their money away? Well, not quite all their money, but every penny City Connection has raised over the past 15 years has all been handed over to numerous charities.

"The band, which is made up of business colleagues, friends or members of family – hence the Connection - now want to celebrate their 15th anniversary with a gig at Eastergate Parish Hall. And the good news is they want St Wilfrid's Hospice to benefit from their kindness."

The group started performing together in 1995 when brothers Neil and Barrie Barker, who are partners in business, decided it would be a good idea to form a band and play at Barrie's 40th birthday party.

They soon roped in their accountant Steve Scurr, who played in a band as a youngster, brother-in-law John Cunningham, who had never sung in his life before, and colleague Sean Caddye, a keen guitarist.

What began as a hobby soon took up much of their spare time, more so when Barrie and his wife Sharron, had a daughter, Maisie who has Down Syndrome and the band decided to raise funds in aid of this charity.

John's wife Carol - Neil and Barrie's sister - later joined the group and has helped the band to raise more than 100,000 for numerous charities.

The latest addition to the band, and another family connection is Rosie, who completes a line-up of vocalists consisting of mum, dad and daughter.

Barrie said: "We are lucky to be able to have fun, meet great people and at the same time help raise money for lots of different charities."

Tickets priced at 20, which includes a fish and chip supper, are available from the fundraising department at St Wilfrid's Hospice on 01243 755827.
