A schoolgirl has been selected to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the USA to promote Girlguiding.

Bethany Heys, 13, of Crecy Close, off The Ridge, is a member of the 14th St Leonards Guides and was one of only 12 girls to be chosen for the excursion.

Her proud mum, Tracy Webb, said: “It was a fantastic achievement for Bethany as she was the only one chosen from Sussex at the London and South East Region event. She was put through her paces with a variety or mental and physical challenges and team building exercises.

“Bethany’s trip will consist of a week’s camp with hundreds of Girl Scouts and Guides from around the world at a site just outside San Fransisco and then another 10 days in California and Yosemite doing the usual sightseeing such as Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Chinatown and supporting some service projects. These will include helping to run food banks, beach clean-ups and assisting families in poverty with back to school uniforms. The trip is costing £3,000 and Bethany now has her biggest challenge, raising these funds. She has already started this with various fundraising projects lined up such as school cake sales, sponsored silence, bingo night and special Christmas raffle and auction.”

If there are any local businesses or people who can help Bethany with her fundraising either by way of sponsorship or donations for the raffle or auction email scottandtracy1@btinternet.com.
