PEOPLE are being asked to watch out for a phone scam which asks for money.
Wealden District Council say the scam claims to offer a council tax refund but only if the resident first makes a payment of £95 to a Western Union bank account. Bank details are also asked for.
One resident was offered a £7,000 ‘refund’ on receipt of the £95 ‘payment’.
In a further twist the recipient of the call was told that if anyone else is told about the offer, there would be a £65 deduction from the refund.
People are advised to contact Wealden’s council tax service on 01323 443385 if they receive any suspicious calls.
And a council spokesman advised everybody to never give bank account details to callers who have not properly identified themselves. If in doubt phone the police.
The council has already informed police about the scam.
