Big time jazz comes to Lindfield
The White Horse Pub overlooking picturesque Lindfield Pond was turned into the atmosphere of a Manhattan downtown speakeasy when internationally renowned saxophonist and local resident Andy Macintosh brought his all star Quintet to the village.
The venue was packed last Thursday evening to hear the band featuring trumpet great Derek Watkins (ex Basie, Goodman,Ted Heath,Frank Sinatra etc etc) give the crowd a mixture of highly charged hard bop intermingled with classic ballads such as "My Foolish Heart and "Once In A While", ideal vehicles for the star man's lyrical flugel-horn solo's.
Those with a liking for the vocal side of jazz were not disappointed with the entrance of Paul Wood (ex James Last Orchestra) with impressive versions of "Have You Met Miss Jones" and "The Folks Who Live On The Hill".
After the interval guest electric bassist/vocalist Tommy McQuater Jnr wowed fans with eclectic versions of "Paper Moon" and "Weaver Of Dreams", before band leader Andy Macintosh rendered a mind blowing alto solo on Cannonball Adderley's "What's New". By the time the band closed the evening with a classic rendition of "Afformation" (Miles Davis) the crowd were at fever pitch. Lindfield had never seen or heard anything like it.
