A Hailsham supermarket is moving into the housing market by installing two brick bird houses directly into the walls of their store to help stem the decline in native birds.

The unique bird boxes were designed and installed by local firm Bird Brick Houses and will provide a predator and weather-proof home for a family of birds in the walls of Waitrose in Hailsham.

The boxes have a unique removable front that enables them to be cleaned out and allows a camera to be installed if required.

Councillor Roy Galley, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Regeneration said: “I applaud Bird Brick Houses as an excellent example of green enterprise and local entrepreneurship.

“They are yet another Wealden-based firm offering a quality, innovative product.

“I also would like to thank Waitrose for its support of local business and helping to enhance local biodiversity. I would encourage other firms and developers to follow its example.”

Wealden District Council is currently working with a number of local primary schools to have the brick bird houses installed, and is looking at further possible locations throughout the district to extend the initiative.

Paul Soane, manager of Waitrose Hailsham said: “At Waitrose we are committed to supporting local businesses and the local environment and are delighted with our new bird houses.

“We are now in talks with Bird Brick Houses to install the bird houses in other stores across the region.”

Jenny McCutchan of Bird Brick Houses said: “We are passionate that wildlife should be encouraged into urban areas, the benefits of this have been linked to improved wellbeing for both birds and people.

“There has been a decline in a number of native bird species due to the loss of nest sites and we hope we can help turn this around. Our vision is to see an integral bird box in each new dwelling and building constructed. Bird Brick Houses would like to thank Waitrose and Wealden District Council for their forward thinking and support on our innovative concept and we look forward to continue our work with them.”
